Today we’ve released a huge update for Download Monitor! Download Monitor 4.0 comes with quite a few new features and a ton of tweaks. However, this post isn’t about that, you can read more about the new features here. In this post we explain why we’re suddenly jumping up all the way to version 4.0 from 1.9.9.
The latest version of Download Monitor, prior to this update that is, is version 1.9.9. In a normal scenario, the next update would be version 2.0. But for Download Monitor this is different. When Download Monitor version 1.0 was released in 2013, there actually already was a Download Monitor plugin. This older version, which was version 220.127.116.11, was written before WordPress had many of the nifty features it has today (like custom post types). So as WordPress kept adding new cool features, one day it was decided that Download Monitor needed a major rewrite.
This rewrite is the version you’re still using today if you’re on 1.9.9. It was launched in 2013 and have been updated and maintained ever since. The reason the version was reset back to version 1.0 was because at the time the decision was made not to upgrade users to the new version automatically. Setting the new version to 1.0 made sure that the users of the old version did not get the update notification in their WordPress admin panels.
Upgrading Everyone to one Version
With this update we’re finally upgrading the users of the old (legacy) version of Download Monitor to the latest version. This means that for the first time in over 5 years, all Download Monitor users will have the ability to automatically update to the latest version. To do this, we’ve included a Legacy Upgrader in this update. The Legacy Upgrader will assist users of the old version to move their downloads to the new structure. It will also offer users to update all of their older shortcodes. You can read more about the Legacy Upgrader here.
